Duties, Current Research, and Other Professional Interests:

Since coming to Arkansas, I have engaged in multiple research projects related to the upland forests of the Midsouth region.  This has included studies on ice damage to pine plantations in the South, investigation of the Cross Timbers woodland in western Arkansas, and completion of long-term growth and yield projects.  Much of my work has also concentrated on the refinement of silvicultural techniques for the development of old-growth-like attributes in managed stands of the northern Lake States and the Midsouth (primarily Arkansas).  To accomplish this, I have initiated research into the identification of presettlement reference conditions, especially in the Upper West Gulf Coastal Plain.  This includes the examination of General Land Office (GLO) survey notes and other types of historical documentation.

Other research projects have included the development of optimal tree diameter increment models for the species of the Midsouth and refinement of existing optimal increment models for more ecologically robust applications.  In addition, my current research also involves the modeling forested ecosystems in the northern Lake States (Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin) and modeling riparian large woody debris recruitment in the central Rocky Mountains (primarily Wyoming). I am also still working on some aspects of my Master’s degree, which involved studying the ecology of birdseye sugar maple.

I am a member of the Society of American Foresters, the Ecological Society of America, the Forest History Society, the Torrey Botanical Society, the U.S. Chapter of the International Association of Landscape Ecologists, and the Natural Areas Association. I am interested in studying the ecological implications of silvicultural treatments across multiple scales.
